Describing drugs as a major obstacle to building a healthy society, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Mohammad Javed Patwary has urged meritorious young people to come forward to lead the movement against the menace.
"We are on the highway to development. But drugs are destroying our society. Drugs are a major obstacle to building a healthy society," he said while addressing a function marking the distribution of stipends among meritorious children of members of Bangladesh Police at the PSC Convention Hall, Dhaka on Saturday, reports BSS.
Mentioning Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's zero-tolerance policy against narcotics, the IGP said the police have also declared a war on drugs.
"The movement against drugs must spread everywhere. Talented young people will have to come forward to lead this movement," he said.
Underscoring the need for receiving proper education, he said: "We can move ahead only through proper education. We do not want certificate-based education.
"We want enlightened people with humanitarian values, good character and morality who will be able to enlighten our society and country as well as encourage others."
Parents are role models for their children, Javed said, because families are the very first teachers. He urged parents to keep a watchful eye on children and give them enough time.
He also called upon guardians to impart their children with ideal education.
Presided over by Additional IGP (HRM) of Police Headquarters Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, the program was also addressed by President of Police Nari Kalyan Samity Habiba Javed, Director General of Rapid Action Battalion Benazir Ahmed and Additional IGP (A&O) Dr Md Mainur Rahman Chowdhury, while AIG (Health and Education) Tapatun Nasrin delivered the welcome speech.
A total of 201 meritorious students, who obtained GPA 5 in HSC and equivalent examinations as well as A Grade in three subjects in A level exams in 2018, were given stipends at the function.
The IGP gave away crests, certificates and cash among the recipients.
The chiefs of different police units in Dhaka, senior police officers, guardians of meritorious students and their family members were present at the program.
