Home minister: Still unsure of reason behind gunfight that killed Nayan

The prime accused in the Rifat murder case was killed in a reported gunfight in Barguna

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has said, he does not know the reason behind the killing of the prime accused, Nayan Bond, in the Rifat Sharif murder case in a ‘gunfight’ with police in Barguna.

The minister was talking to reporters after stepping out of a program, Bangabandhu and Sompritir Bangladesh towards century, at the Cirdap auditorium in Dhaka on Tuesday.

He said: “As of yet, I am not aware of the reason why he [Nayan] was shot. But rest assured, he must have been seen in possession of firearms.”

According to the police, Sabbir Ahmed Nayan alias Nayan Bond was killed when he and his gang opened fire on police in Burirchar union on early hours of Tuesday. The others managed to flee the scene, police claimed.

The minister also said, Nayan was not in one location for long. “Our intelligence and security forces were always onto the three murderers. We caught two of them. But Nayan, was on run, and continuously changing his location.”

He added: “We will identify the people behind the killing, will thoroughly investigate. We do not want such incidents to be repeated in Bangladesh.

The minister furthered, police will also track down the influential people behind the killing.

“You have seen that no one is getting a free pass, not any influential individual, not even elected representatives.”

Rifat Sharif, 22, was hacked to death by several people—in front of his wife Ayesha Siddiqua Minni—near Barguna Government College in Barguna town, in broad daylight, on Wednesday. The incident sparked mass outrage and shock across the country.

Until now, police have arrested three suspects in connection with a case—accusing 12 people—Rifat's father lodged with Barguna Sadar police station.
