Law minister: Develop new tech to identify fake news

Anisul Huq added that accountability of social media users needs to be ensured

Law Minister Anisul Huq has said it is of the utmost importance to develop new technology to identify fake news and hate speech on the internet.

He made the comment while addressing a dialogue titled “Fake news and hate speech, causes and consequences: How it subverts our democratic system,” held at Cosmos Center in Dhaka on Saturday.

The minister said: “We need to develop new technology to identify fake news. We have to use technology to fight its adverse effects. Accountability of social media users needs to be ensured.

We must find out the source of their funding.”

Dan Shefet, president of Association for Accountability and Internet Democracy, was the keynote speaker at the event.

The program was presided over by Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury, principal research fellow at Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS) Singapore, while Enayetullah Khan, chairman of Cosmos Foundation gave the welcome speech.
