Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) authorities on Tuesday said that the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's health condition is improving.

After visiting the BNP chairperson, BSMMU Director Brig Gen Mahbubul spoke to reporters about her physical condition.

"She is taking her medications as prescribed on Monday. Her blood sugar level is being checked which she does herself everyday to know her sugar status," he added.

The BNP chief was admitted to BSMMU on Monday afternoon from the Dhaka Central jail where she has been serving jail term on corruption charges.

Replying to a question about her psychological condition, Mahbubul said: "Health deteriorates with age. It usual worsens when a person becomes ill.”

Regarding BNP's allegation that their chairperson was not given proper treatment when she was admitted there in October, he said: "I cannot make any comment over the matter as I have been here at the hospital as a director for only two weeks. But, I think she is now satisfied with her treatment."

The BSMMU director said Khaleda spoke to them with a smile and now she is able to move her hands freely.

BNP leaders were expressing their concerns over ensuring their chairperson’s proper treatment who has been in jail for the last 13 months.

But she refused to take treatment from BSMMU last March, rather wanted to be treated at United Hospital.

At last she was admitted to BSMMU and subsequently, a five-member medical board was formed to oversee her treatment.

Head of the board Prof Zilan Miah Sarker said that Khaleda was very cooperative even though she did not speak much. Her physical condition is also getting better.

“Her condition is not severe, however arthritis is making her suffer. It is only in her feet, her hands are okay. Pain in her left leg scaled up a little, but is always fluctuating,” he added.

“She is using gel for the pain in her leg. She is under close observation and her blood pressure is under control," he also added.
