Students demonstrated throughout Tuesday demanding justice for Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury

Update : 19 Mar 2019, 11:40 PM

Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) has cancelled the registration of the Suprovat Paribahan bus, which ran over a student of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) in Dhaka.

“Registration of the bus (Dhaka Metro-B-11-4135) has been temporally cancelled under Section 43 of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance 1983,” a BRTA statement said on Tuesday, reports Bangla Tribune.

Around 7:15am Tuesday, Abrar Ahmed Chowdhury — an honours first year student of BUP’s International Relations Department — was run over and killed on the spot by a Suprovat Paribahan bus while crossing the road using zebra crossing on Pragati Sarani in front of the Jamuna Future Park at Kuril.

His death then sparked a massive protest by the students of his university. They were later joined by students of other educational institutions.

Although police impounded the bus and arrested its driver soon after, the students blockaded the busy road and demonstrated throughout day, demanding justice for Abrar and capital punishment for those responsible for the death.

The students ended the demonstrations later in the evening, but announced that they would continue protests from Wednesday morning till the authorities meet their eight demands, calling for safer roads.
