A ‘Monitoring Cell’ in collaboration with the city corporation, local public representatives, and the police, will be formed to evict illegal chemical warehouses and combustible material-based factories from old Dhaka.
“By forming a ‘Monitoring Cell’, City corporation, local public representatives, and police will make combine efforts to throw out the illegal chemical warehouses and combustible material-based factories located in old Dhaka,” Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner, Md Asaduzzaman Mia, told journalists on Thursday after visiting the spot where the deadly fire broke out in the city’s Chawkbazar area. The monitoring cell will survey the area and prepare the list of illegal chemical warehouses and combustible material-based factories, before carrying out their eviction drive, he said. Chemical factories in a residential area are risky and a threat to public safety.
Government will take a severe stance in the eviction process, he said. The DMP commissioner said a total of 67 bodies have been recovered so far, adding that the bodies of the deceased are being kept at Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for identification.
More than 50 people were injured, he said, adding: “Of them, the condition of nine is critical.”
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Lalbagh division, Mohammad Ibrahim, and Traffic Police (South) Deputy Commissioner (DC), Md Murad Hossain, were present on the occasion.
