A Dhaka University (DU) student has been released after being detained for 20 hours from the university campus.
Sheikh Sazzad Hassan, a fourth year honours student of the Law department, was picked up by men claiming to be Detective Branch of Police (DB) officials from the campus shadow area near the Arts Faculty building on Tuesday around 7pm.
He was picked up for questioning, and released around 4pm on Wednesday, confirmed DU proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani.
“The law enforcers picked him up and later released him after questioning. They have informed me of his release,” Prof Rabbani said.
Asked why DB officials picked up the student, he said the DB officials might have picked up Sazzad to talk about some legal issues.
Seeking anonymity, one of Sazzad’s friends told reporters that Sazzad, along with three of his friends, were having a chat at the campus shadow area around 7pm. A white microbus suddenly arrived, out of which three or four people emerged.
Claiming to be DB officials, they inquired about the students’ identity.
They then picked up the DU students but later released three of them near Shahbagh police station. However, they took Sazzad, Sazzad’s friend added.
Some of Sazzad’s classmates notified the departments’ Chairperson Naima Haque about the matter, requesting her to take steps to know about his whereabouts. She then sent the students to the proctor’s office with Sazzads’ information.
