Barrister Mainul Hosein has received division status in prison, following a High Court order.
Dhaka Central Jail Jailer Mahbubul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune they received the court directive around 5pm on Monday.
Jail sources said Mainul will receive a separate room, table, chair, newspaper, and other benefits as per the high court order.
Earlier, the High Court ordered the prison authorities to provide first-class division facilities to former caretaker government adviser Mainul Hosein, who has been arrested in a defamation case.
The bench of Justices Sheikh Hassan Arif and Razik-Al-Jalil issued the order on Saturday.
Dr Kamal Hossain and Khandker Mahbub Hossain represented Mainul in court, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the state.
Mainul called journalist Masuda Bhatti “characterless” on an October 16 TV talk show. Female journalists had asked the lawyer to apologize for his comment, and Bhatti sued Mainul four days after the comment as he did not apologize.
Mainul has since been named in at least six other cases in Jamalpur, Kurigram, Brahmanbaria, Bhola, Comilla, and Rangpur.
He secured advance bail from the High Court in the three cases filed in Dhaka, Jamalpur, and Kurigram.
He was arrested in the Rangpur case on October 22. The Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court rejected his bail petition and ordered that he be kept in jail. Mainul has since been imprisoned at the Dhaka Central Jail.
