A five member medical board team has visited old Dhaka central jail in Nazimuddin Road to examine BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s health condition.
The doctors entered the jail premises in a microbus around 3:45pm on Saturday.
However, the doctors did not speak with the press after coming out of the jail around 4:50pm.
Dhaka Central Jail Jailer Mahbubul Islam told the press: “The doctors examined Khaleda from 20-30 minutes. They will give the prescription later and prison authorities will take necessary actions, accordingly."
Earlier on Thursday, the medical board was formed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), after jail authorities sent a letter, confirmed BSMMU Director Brig Gen Md Abdullah-Al-Harun.
BSMMU Internal Medicine Department Head Dr Abdul Jalil Chowdhury is heading the board.
Other members of the board are – Cardiology Department Prof Harisul Haque, Orthopaedic Surgery Department Chairman Professor Abu Zafar Chowdhury Biru, Ophthalmology Department Associate Prof Tariq Reza Ali and Physical Medicine Department Associate Prof Badrunnessa Ahmed.
The former prime minister was sentenced to five years in jail on February 8 for embezzling donations meant for the orphanage. She has since been kept at the old Dhaka central jail.
Five others, including her son Tarique Rahman, were sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment and fined Tk2.1 crore each for their role in the crime.
Khaleda had secured four months' bail from the High Court on March 12. Two days later, the ACC and the state filed two leave-to-appeal petitions with the Appellate Division challenging her bail.
Later, the apex court on March 19 stayed the bail until May 8.
Hearings on the appeal petitions filed by the state and the ACC were held on May 8 and 9.
The ACC had filed the case on July 3, 2008, against Khaleda, her son Tarique, and four others for misappropriating Tk2.1 crore from the trust fund.
