The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has opened its 50th police station, located in the Hatirjheel area.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal inaugurated the police station at 4:30pm on Saturday. Home Ministry Public Security Division Secretary Mostafa Kamal Uddin, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Patwari, RAB DG Benazir Ahmed, DMP Commissioner Ashaduzzaman Mia, and Additional Commissioner and Counter Terrorism Chief Monirul Islam were present on the occasion.
Speaking at the inauguration, the home minister said: “In 2008, Hatirjheel used to be an area rife with criminal activities. Dead bodies would even be dumped here. However, due to the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Hatirjheel has changed and now both locals and foreigners frequent the location. The new police station will ensure their security.”
IGP Javed Patwari said that it had previously been difficult for police to reach the Hatirjheel area, with significant chaos having been caused by BNP and Jamaat in 2013 and 2014. “Now, with Hatirjheel police station, police will be able to respond at any time.”
DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Mia said Hatirjheel police station will be a symbol of public security, and strict action would be taken against any police official who was found to be causing public suffering or harassing citizens.
According to DMP sources, the Tejgaon industrial zone, Ramna, Rampura, Gulshan and Badda police station areas overlapped in around 16 kilometers of the Hatirjheel area. If any incident or criminal activity occurred in this area, it would previously take a long time to identify which police station had jurisdiction. To solve this problem, a number of people had long been proposing that a Hatirjheel police station be established.
DMP’s media and public relations department said the West Rampura, Ulan, Nayatola, Madhubag, Mirbag, Mohanogor Project Area, Hatirjheel-Badda Link Road, Abul Hossain Road, Wapda Road, Hatirjheel Project areas as well as parts of the Banglamotor, Eskaton, Magbazar, Malibagh Chowdhurypara, Wireless intersection road, police Plaza, Paarabag, Dilu Road, Malibagh Railway Crossing, Hajipara, Hotel Sonargaon areas will now fall under the jurisdiction of Hatirjheel police station.
