The protesters complained that Bangladesh Chhatra League members had picked up some of them while the cleaning drive was ongoing. One of the protesters, Ujjol Miya said: “We started our cleaning drive peacefully from the Public Library, but shortly afterwards some Chhatra League members came, picked up some of the leaders of the protest and took them to Madhur Canteen.”
The cleaning drive crew with their banner Bangla TribuneBangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkan Parishad Convener Hasan Al Imran said: “We were taken to Madhur Canteen for discussion. We had a talk and now we are leaving.”
When asked, Chhatra League President Saifur Rahman Shohag said: “They were brought over for a discussion. The original conveners of the movement were absent today, but the protest is still going on in their name.”
The demonstrators have long been trying to make the government accept their five-point demands, including calls to slash the quota in government jobs to 10% from the current 56%, not hold special exams to fill up quota posts, stop the use of quota facility more than once and fixing same cut-off marks and age for all in government jobs.This article was first published on banglatribune.com
