Despite previously being listed as a conservation site, a century old structure in Old Dhaka is being demolished.
Locals and activists claimed the demolition was a result of ammendments to the list of conversation sites by RAJUK last year, when protection for the Farashganj, Shakari Bazar, Sutrapur and Ramna areas was withdrawn.
The demolition of Hrishikesh Das Road’s House No 43, in the Farashganj area, began earlier this week to make room for a multi-storied apartment building. The area was listed as a conservation site in 2009, according to Sub-Rule 61 under the Dhaka Mahanagar Building (Construction, Development, Protection and Removal) Rule 2008.
However, RAJUK amended the list last year, excluding the aforementioned areas. When asked for his comment on the matter, RAJUK Chairman Abdur Rahman asked the Dhaka Tribune to contact him on Monday or Tuesday.
