'Cattle wastes to be removed by 2pm Sunday'

Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon has said wastes of all the slaughtered animals will be removed by 2pm Sunday. He made the statement while inspecting the cleaning programme at Sadek Hossain Khoka playground, place of a makeshift cattle market in Dhaka, Saturday afternoon. Muslims devotees across Bangladesh sacrificed cattle to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha on Saturday. The cleaning campaign in both Dhaka south and north city corporation began around 2pm. Khokhon said: “All the wastes will be removed within 24 hours. Around 17,000 cleaners from both the city corporation have been deployed to clean the whole city.” The DSCC mayor said the city corporations have supplied bags, bleaching powder and sanitiser at the designated spots, and will collect the waste bags and also clean the areas on the second and third day of the Eid. He said the DSCC residents could complain about any poor cleaning service through the “Nogor” app or reach him directly through Viber and Whatsapp while the DNCC residents could complain through the helpline ‘09611000999’ during the Eid vacation. Residents slaughtered their sacrificial cattle out on the streets to observe Eid-ul-Azha, violating the instructions issued by the city authorities as well as the Local Government Division. The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) designated 1,174 spots around the city for slaughtering sacrificial animals in order to keep the city roads clean and blood-free. However, visiting several neighbourhoods in Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, Shukrabad and Rajabazar areas under the DSCC on Saturday morning, this correspondent found the residents, especially local influential leaders, sacrificing their cattle in front of their houses or on the streets and alleyways instead.
