Update : 26 Oct 2016, 10:24 PM
DMP's Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit chief Monirul Islam has said that no comment should be made regarding Italian citizen Cesare Tavella murder case since it is a sub-judice matter. “DB police is a well-tested unit of the DMP. They filed charge sheet against the accused [seven people including BNP leaders and activists] after proper investigation. There is no scope of questioning their activities,” Monirul told reporters at a press conference Wednesday.Cesare Tavella Cesare TavellaOn October 21, RAB chief Benazir Ahmed claimed that New JMB had been involved in the murder, based on evidence they recovered from the house of a militant leader, Sarwar Jahan, in Ashulia area on October 8. Even though international terrorist group Islamic State took credit for the murder of aid worker Tavella, the investigators did not find the involvement of any militant group and press charges against seven including Dhaka city unit BNP's Joint Convener MA Qaiyum and his brother Abdul Matin. New JMB is believed to have affiliation with the IS. The accused were indicted on Tuesday by a Dhaka court which also set November 24 to start the trial. The five others are Tamjid Ahmed Rubel alias Shooter Rubel, Russell Chowdhury alias Chakki Russel, Minhajul Arefin, Sohel alias Bhangari Sohel, and Shakhawat Hossain Sharif. “Criminal cases are tried on the basis of depositions and evidence. There is no scope of creativity here,” Monirul said. Asked about the possible impact of RAB chief's comment on the trial, the CTTC unit chief said: “I was out of the country when he made the comment. I have not listened to his remarks yet. “However, I believe he did not say anything like this. As a responsible person, he cannot make comments on a sub-judice matter because it may hinder the case proceedings.” About Qaiyum's arrest, Monirul said that he had fled to India. “As a court issued arrest warrant against him, he will be arrested if he comes to Bangladesh.” Tavella, who had been living alone in Dhaka and worked for a Dutch aid organisation, was shot dead on Road 90, Gulshan 2 on September 28 last year.
