A Bangladeshi worker was among 15 people killed in a fire at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex (AGCC) in Russia’s eastern Amur region on Tuesday, the Bangladesh Embassy in Moscow said Thursday.
Another Bangladeshi worker remains missing, while seven others were seriously injured, said Mizanur Rahman, the embassy’s first secretary (labour).
The deceased was identified as Zakir Hossain, from Bhairab in Kishoreganj. The missing worker, Md Alal Hossain Raju, is from Gangni in Meherpur.
Mizanur said some bodies were badly burned and could not yet be identified. Raju may be among the unidentified remains, he said.
According to Reuters, AGCC initially reported seven deaths, including six Chinese nationals, on Wednesday. The company later raised the death toll to 15 in a post on its Telegram channel on Thursday, saying 14 of the dead were foreign nationals.
AGCC said the fire originated in an auxiliary section of a pyrolysis unit before spreading. The complex’s main equipments were not damaged, it said.
Mizanur said arrangements were underway to transfer the seven seriously injured Bangladeshi workers from Amur to a specialised hospital in Moscow. Six are currently in intensive care.
The embassy has contacted the relevant authorities to arrange the repatriation of Zakir’s body.
The embassy will also continue discussions with LLC Sinopec Engineering Group regarding Zakir’s outstanding dues and compensation, Mizanur said.
The embassy has already prepared the required attestation and other documents for repatriating the body.
