A Madaripur court has granted police 10 days to interrogate a suspected militant who was allegedly involved in the life attempt on a Hindu college teacher.
Investigators moved the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court on Friday seeking permission to question Ghulam Faizullah Fahim in custody for 15 days.
Members of the minority communities have come under frequent attacks in recent times in Bangladesh. Although international terrorist groups have claimed responsibilities for the assaults and killings, the government puts the blame on homegrown militants.
Police claim Fahim, 18, is a member of militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir, which was outlawed in 2009.
Madaripur Government Nazimuddin College teacher Ripon Chakrabarty was attacked by three assailants wielding meat cleavers in his house near the college on Wednesday.
Fahim was caught by locals while fleeing the scene. He was an HSC examinee from Uttara High School and College but did not sit the tests.
This is the first time police have come to learn about Hizb ut-Tahrir's involvement in targeted killings.
