According to government statistics, 71 women and children were tortured in the month of July, including seven rape victims. Furthermore, five fell victim to human trafficking.
The information was presented in a law enforcement report during a district Law and Order Committee held on Sunday. The conference was held in presence of the Khulna District Commissioner and Magistrate Mohammad Amin Ul Ahsan.
As per the law enforcement report, 247 cases, including charges of murder, rape, robbery, arms, human traffiking and narcotics, were filed with 8 police stations in Khulna city in July. In June, the number was 222.
Of the 247 cases, two were for rape, nineteen were for abuse of women and children, and one was filed for trafficking.
In addition, 224 cases were filed with nine police stations in nearby districts in July, as opposed to 237 in June.
Of the 224 cases, five were for rape, 40 were for the abuse of women and children, and four for human trafficking.
During the conference, the District Drug Control Department informed of a drug operation in the district and metropolitan areas, beginning in July. A member of the committee proposed the preparation of a list of drug dealers in the Khulna area and for the list to be published in newspapers and magazines.
Moreover, the Deputy Commissioner advised that all remain vigilant regarding illegal activities, especially drugs, and urged young people to promote cultural activities and highlight the importance of sports practice.
Meanwhile, during the meeting, District Council Chairman Sheikh Harunur Rashid urged the Khulna City Corporation to disallow the setting up of cattle markets in unspecified locations, and asked for assistance with the removal of cattle waste during Eid-ul-Azha.
