Suspected drug dealer killed in ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug dealer has been killed in a “gunfight” with police at Jhumjhumpur area in the outskirts of Jessore town early Friday.

The deceased, Taher Mollah, 40, son of late Sona Ullah of Jhumjhumpur, was an accused in five to seven cases including murder and drug trading.

Rafiqul Islam, acting officer in-charge of Kotwali police station told Dhaka Tribune: “Acting on a tip-off, police from Kotwali police station went to Jhumjhumpur early Friday while two two groups of terrorists were fighting in the area.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, both the terrorist groups attacked the police around 4:30am,” he added.

In retaliation, police opened fire, leaving Taher injured.

Later, bullet wounded Taher was taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 6am.

Two policemen- Arif and Shamim- were also hurt during the “gunfight.”

Police recovered a shooter-gun, one round of bullet and two kilograms of cannabis from the scene.
