Patient dies from ‘wrong treatment’ in Savar

Update : 20 May 2014, 07:44 PM

The relatives of a deceased patient went on a rampage in a hospital in Savar yesterday alleging ‘wrong’ treatment by the surgeon of the hospital.

Deceased, Azufa, 52, wife of Makbul Hossain, of Emandipur area under Savar municipality, died on an operating table at Savar Central Hospital in early hours yesterday.

Makbul Hossain, husband of the deceased, told the Dhaka Tribune that she was admitted into the hospital on May 5 after she had a major stomach ache. His relatives wanted to get her released from the hospital as there had been no sign of improvement since her admission.

On the contrary, instead of releasing her, the hospital authority advised her to have an operation on her uterus.

Later, Dr Abu Taher, the surgeon and owner of the hospital, took her to the operating table at 12:30am yesterday. The doctor informed the relatives of her death after two hours of operation.

The relatives went berserk at the news of her death and ran amok in the hospital. Police rushed to the spot being informed and took the situation under control.

Locals alleged that there had been similar type of incidents at the hospital due to alleged ‘wrong treatment’ by the doctors but the administration concerned did not take any action regarding the allegations.

The Officer-in-Charge of Savar Model Station said the police calmed the agitated relatives down who went berserk at the hospital and took the situation under control.

If they receive written complaint regarding the matter, they will investigate the incident, he added.
