Update : 14 May 2014, 07:43 AM

Conflicting statements came from the authorities on the arrest of an accused in the seven killings of Narayanganj.

Reports have been run in media that Hashmat Ali Hasu, the accountant of prime accused Nur Hossain, was arrested on Wednesday morning.

Junior Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told an online media that Hashmat Ali Hasu was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday.

However, police, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) authorities told the Dhaka Tribune they were not aware of the arrest.

A leading Bangla daily said Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) captured Hasu from the borders of Jessore.

However, their source, Narayanganaj police Additional police Superintendent Mohammad Zakaria told the Dhaka Tribune he “did not tell such information.”

“We do not know about the arrest- this is what we have told  them and others. I do not know how they came up with this report.”

Narayanganj police Superintendent Khandakar Mahid Uddin said he was unaware of the arrest.

On the other hand, authorities of Jessore law enforcement agencies- police SP Anisur Rahman, RAB 6 Major Masudur Rahman and BGB 26 Lt Col Motiur Rahman – were also unaware of the arrest.

Dhaka Tribune contacted junior Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal afterward. Kamal assured that the arrest was made.

Nur Hossain is a local ward counsillor of Narayanganj city and is the prime accused in the seven murders of the district.

A top RAB official claimed that Nur fled to Kolkata, India from within the security net of the law enforcement agencies. Family of those killed have alleged this was possible with help of RAB.
