Chittagong mugging: Injured student succumbs

The student of Premier University of Chittagong who received bullet injuries while trying to foil a mugging attempt, has succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in the capital on Wednesday afternoon.

The deceased, Yasir Arafat Emon, 22, BBA first year student and son of expatriate Mohammad Eilias, resident of Bhorapukur Par area under Bakalia Police Station in the port city, was died in United Hospital in Dhaka at 4:00pm, said police.

According to family members, Emon and his friend Saddam Hossain resisted some muggers at the city’s Dewanbazar area on Tuesday while the hijackers were trying to snatch a mobile phone set from a pedestrian.

The muggers left the spot immediately after the incident. But, the miscreants came back after some while and swooped on the victims, hacked Saddam and shot Emon.

Locals rescued them and admitted at Chittagong Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Later, Emon was shifted to Dhaka as his condition deteriorated.

Mohammad Mohsin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bakalia police station, said: “A case has been filed in this connection and we are conducting drives to arrest the criminals.”
