A housewife committed suicide after poisoning her daughter at Basuria village under Tungipara upazila in Gopalganj yesterday.
Local people said Beauty Begum had taken poison after trying to kill her daughter. Sensing her critical condition local, neighbours took her to Gopalganj Sadar Hospital where she died while her daughter Ranu is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Mojlen Haque, father of Beauty, said his daughter had been compelled to commit suicide as she could not tolerate torture of his husband.
Lichhu Sheikh had been torturing Beauty over dowry since the start of their conjugal life three years back, he said, adding that he had also provided Lichhu Tk1.5 lakh for going to abroad.
But he came back after two months in January this year, since then he has been demanding more money and torturing Beauty over the issue. Mojlen Haque demanded exemplary punishment to Lichhu without any delay.
Muniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj sadar police station, said a case had been filed in this regard.
