Two policemen arrested over ‘extortion charges’

Update : 02 May 2014, 09:53 PM

The district Sadar police arrested three persons including two police constables on Thursday on charges of alleged extortion from a biker.

The arrestees are district police constables Atikuzzaman and Mamunur Rashid and Monu Miah, an associate of Mamunur.

Locals said the two police constables allegedly demanded Tk50,000 from a biker, Maidul Islam, when the latter was on his way home after meeting his younger brother, Liton, at Kurigram College hostel on Wednesday evening.

Maidul hails from Porarchar village under Roumari upazila in the district.

Maidul’s brother, however, transferred one-fifth of the demand to the bKash (Mobile phone cash transfer) account given by the two constables.

Liton also informed Kurigram Sadar police of the matter.

Policemen in plain clothes kept a close watch on the bKash shop in the Kurigram Municipality market since evening when the two constables and their associate Monu Miah appeared there to withdraw the money.

The plain-clothes police then arrested the alleged extortionists from the spot.

Another constable Shah Alam who had been serving the Kurigram court managed to escape. Police are trying to nab him.

Later, Liton Miah, younger brother of Maidul, filed a case with the Sadar police station on Thursday.

The arrestees were sent to jail.

Kurigram Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Baten Miah said the two policemen were arrested for violation of discipline.

A case has been filed against the constables, he added.
