A businessman has been abducted from Sanarpar area, Narayanganj amidst prevailing heat in the district over the recent spate of kidnappings.
Syed Saiful Islam, a local businessman, was abducted on Thursday, Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police Shohidul Islam confirmed on Friday.
“A general diary was filed with the police in regard to the kidnapping around 10am in the morning. We are going to the spot now. Details will be revealed later,” he said.
Saiful's wife Sadia Sultana said: "We recieved a call demanding a ransom of Tk20 lakh around 2:30am."
In the morning, agitated locals took to the streets in protest to the incident. Additional law enforcers were deployed to tame tension in the area.
This abduction took place a day after a new police superintendent was appointed for Narayangaj in the backdrop of agitations in protest of kidnappings in the area.
Recently, seven bodies surfaced in the Sitalakhya river. A missing local ward councillor and another missing lawyer were among the dead.
This led to the removal of several top level officials of Narayanganj, including the deputy commissioner, police superintendent and RAB commander.
On April 16, Bela chief Syeda Rizwana Hasan's husband Abu Bakar Siddique was abducted from Fatulla area, Narayanganj. He was released 30 hours later.
