Update : 27 Apr 2014, 01:18 PM

Fake Indian currency and contraband medicine worth around Tk8.5 crore have been seized from the cargo area of Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The supplies were said to have been smuggled in from Pakistan on a Qatar Airlines flight in a consignment on Sunday, customs officials said.

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate Assistant Director Ayesha Akhter endorsed the information. “The haul was made upon a tip-off around 9:30am.”

“The consignment was enlisted under the name of Kamal Ahmed, addressed to 36/A South Keraniganj,” she added. “The supplies arrived from Pakistan.”

“Fake Indian currency worth around Tk7.5 crore and unapproved supply of medicine worth Tk1 crore were found in five cartons of the consignment,” she added.

Sources in police and intelligence units claimed different militant groups based in Pakistan and active in Bangladesh are behind the circulation of fake Indian currencies.
