Nine trafficking victims return from Iran

After several months of ordeal nine victims of human trafficking returned to Bangladesh from Iran yesterday.

A flight of Fly Dubai carrying the migrant workers arrived at the Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 10:40am, said Executive Director of the Rights Jessore Binoy Krishno.

With the help of Bangladesh Embassy in Tehran, the CID and Rights Jessore repatriated Halim, Mohosin, Shohorab, Shahab Uddin, Samar Uddin, Tomij Uddin, Jillur Rahman, Hridoy and Romiz Ali.

“I worked as a construction worker in Dubai. Three and a half months back a middleman named Imran Chowdhury alias Habib assured me of a lucrative job in Greece and I was taken to Iran,” Halim said at the CID office yesterday.

He alleged that Imran and two others named Nazrul and Mizan confined him to a house and took Tk220,000 from him through bKash. “For three and a half months I was beaten up. They did not even provide food often.”

The man from Narsingdi said: “On April 9, Iranian police rescued me along with others and produced before a court. Zia, an official at the Bangladesh Embassy in Tehran, helped me return.”

CID Assistant Superintendent of Police Saiful Islam said two cases would be filed against Imran Chowdhury with Monohordi police station of Narsingdi.Another case will be filed in Mathbaria of Pirojpur and another in Brahmanbaria Sadar.

“We have heard that such things are happening but have not received any complaint,” Bangladesh Ambassador in United Arab Emirates Mohammad Imran told this correspondent over phone.

“If we know the matter specifically we will go for action,” he said.
