28 gold bars seized at Shahjalal airport

In the wake of rampant smuggling of gold, another haul of 28 gold bars weighting around 3.25kg have been seized at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Friday morning.

The gold bars were recovered from a person who arrived at Dhaka on a flight of the Emirates Airlines from Dubai.

Moinul Khan, director general of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID), told the Dhaka Tribune that they arrested 40-year-old Mohammad Bahar with the gold bars around 8:30am.

“The gold bars were found by searching his shoes and different parts of his body while he had been crossing the immigration. Each of the gold bars is weighting to 116 grams,” said the CIID chief.

Being asked, the CIID official said detained Bahar is one of the carriers of smuggled gold by his profession, although his passport shows his profession as a businessman.

Customs and CIID officials said process to hand over the detained person to police through filing of a case was on in connection with the seizure of the gold worth around Tk150 crore.
