Not new, but a rare incident that a mugger ate up an ear-ring made of gold after he was caught red handed by a mob during his attempt of flee after snatching the ornament from an ear of a teenager girl in capital’s Gulistan on Monday evening.
The 28-year-old mugger identified as Amir Hossain was admitted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) while the 15-year-old girl Munni and her mother Anwara Begum, an employee of the capital’s Shuhrawardi Medical College and Hospital, had been waiting at the hospital for the recovery of the gold ring.
Anwara Begum said the mugger had snatched a ring from one of the ears of her daughter Munni while they had been crossing the road in Gulistan at around 6:00pm.
“As my daughter cried out, the pedestrians caught the mugger red handed while he had been trying to escape running away,” she said.
“But when the mugger could understand that he would not be able to escape, he ate up the gold made ring.”
Assistant Sub-Inspector Iqbal Monir of Sergeant Ahad Police Outpost in Gulistan said the mugger admitted that he had eaten up the ring when the pedestrians gave him a good beating.
“We rescued the mugger at a critical condition and rushed to the DNCH for his treatment purpose”, said ASI Monir.
The mugger, who is mainly an addict, was used to reside on the road surrounding the Golap Shah Majar area, he added.
Anwara Begum said they came to the DMCH by hiring a rickshaw following policemen, who took the mugger to the hospital.
“I had purchased a pair of rings for my daughter with my income and we want the gold ring back”, she said but she could not say how she could get the ring back.
Meanwhile, a gang of criminals took Tk65000 by chopping a fruits trader at Dholaipar of Jatrabari on Monday morning while he had been on the way to Jatrabari intersection for purchasing fruits.
Identified as Sabuj Hossain, 27, the trader said four to five criminals had intercepted him while he had been on his way by a rickshaw and the gang stabbed him as he had tried to resist the criminals from snatching his money from his possession.
Abani Shankar Kar, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari police station, said injurd trader was rushed to the DMCH by the pedestrian and police were trying to arrest the criminals.
