A 40-year-old businessman died after being beaten allegedly by a group of unidentified assailants in the capital's Khilgaon area, police said on Saturday

The deceased was identified as Kamruzzaman Khan Dipu, who ran a water supply business. He was the son of Md Sams Uddin and a resident of 721/1/A, Block C, Khilgaon, said Sub-Inspector (SI) Sumon Mia of Khilgaon Police Station.

Police recovered the body from Mugda General Hospital around 10pm on Friday. After completing the required legal formalities, the body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue, where an autopsy was conducted on Saturday.

According to police, witnesses said 10 to 12 unidentified men assaulted Dipu around 7pm on July 29 before leaving him critically injured near the Khilgaon Rail Gate.

He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors advised immediate admission to the intensive care unit (ICU). However, no ICU bed was available, and his family could not afford treatment at a private hospital. They later took him home.

His condition deteriorated, and he was taken to Mugda General Hospital around 7:45pm on Friday, where the duty doctor declared him dead.

Police said an investigation was underway, and legal action will be taken based on its findings.
