A local drug trader tortured a college student by accusing him of stealing betel nuts in Ukhiya of Cox's Bazar.
The victim is Md Raihan, 19, a 12th grader of Cox's Bazar City College.
Raihan's father, Mohammad Amin, on Sunday night filed a case against five-six unidentified people in the incident, making Fazal Quader, identified as the main accused, at Ukhiya police station.
Witnesses said that Raihan was picked up by a group of five people led by Fazal Quader in Deilpara area of Jaliapalong union in Ukhia upazila Saturday evening and taken to Fazal's home. There, they tied his hands and feet and tortured him in various ways for about two hours.
After getting the news, locals rescued Raihan from the courtyard of Fazal Quader's house and his relatives took him to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for treatment. The doctor on duty said that Raihan's back, face and stomach were injured.
Raihan, who is undergoing treatment at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, said: “Fazal Quader and his sister-in-law, along with four-five people, picked me up, tied me and beat me accusing me of theft. They hit me on the upper body with electric wires, iron rods and I became unconscious.”
Raihan's mother Huraitul Jannat, 38, demanded justice for the accused in the incident. She said: “My son is innocent, he was brutally attacked by Fazal Quader and his family for no reason. I want justice against them.”
On October 10, 2018, Fazal Quader, a former Jubo League leader of Ukhiya's Jaliapalong union, was suspended by the Jaliapalong union committee after he was accused of involvement in Yaba business. Later, he became more reckless and got involved in various criminal activities including drug dealing.
Fazal could not be reached for comment regarding the incident. However, his brother Azizul Haque Aziz denied the incident.
In this regard, Ukhia police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sheikh Mohammad Ali said: "A case has been filed. Legal action will be taken in this regard.”
