A man has been remanded for the murder of a homeless 16-year-old girl, whose body was recovered from behind the Central Shaheed Minar early on Sunday morning.

The deceased, Mim, 16, is the daughter of Sundari Begum from Kamrangichar Jhauchor area, and used to sell flowers in the Shahbagh area. On Sunday morning, Mim’s friends found her unconscious and rushed her to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where on-duty doctors pronounced her dead at 3.15am. A dark wound was spotted on her neck.

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuiyan granted the 5-day remand, when an investigation officer from Shahbagh police station produced the accused Abul Khayer, 35, in court on Monday seeking a 10-day remand, according to Shariful Islam, general recording officer (GRO) of the court.

Mim’s mother Sundari filed a murder and attempted rape case with Shahbagh police station on Sunday.

Mamun-or-Rashid, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shahbagh police station, told Dhaka Tribune that it could be an incident of rape and murder.

"However, we do not have medical evidence to support rape yet as reports haven’t been filed,” he said.
