3 online banking fraudster arrested

Police have sought four days remand from the court for the three arrestee

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Cybersecurity and Crime Division have arrested three online banking fraudster from Cox’s Bazar, Dhaka and Faridpur districts.

Cybersecurity and Crime Division Additional Deputy Police Commissioner (ADC) Md Nazmul Islam said the social media team lead by Assistant Commissioner (AC) Dhruba Joetirmoya Gope arrested the head of the fraudulent circle, Mamun Talukder, from a hotel in Cox’s Bazar around 5am on March 20.

On the same drive, Mamun’s two associate-- Raju Farazi was arrested from Dhaka’s Jatrabari area around 7:05pm and Md Mithu Mridha was arrested from Faridpur’s Bhanga area around 5:15am on March 21, he added.

The members of law enforcement agency seized an Axio car, seven mobile phones with special applications, several falsely registered SIM cards, and numbers of bank, Bikash, Nagad and Skrill accounts from them.

In primary investigation, they have confessed their crimes.

For several months, the circle spoofed few banks’ head office card division’s mobile number and used it to call branch managers to collect names, phone numbers and card numbers of previous months new card users.

The circle then called up the users as the banks’ customer care agent to activate or fix their cards and asked them to provide their card’s validity date, card verification value (CVV) and mobile one-time password (OTP). 

After having the information, they transferred money from those accounts to London-based e-commerce app Skrill, Bikash and Nagad accounts. Later, cashed it out from ATM booths, Bikash and Nagad agents.

Likewise, hundreds of customers lost almost Tk50 lakhs from their accounts in several banks. As few banks sent a compliant to Cybersecurity and Crime Division Deputy Commissioner AFM Al Kibria, he immediately informed Bangladesh Bank and gave directives to conduct the drive.

A case has been filled with Dhanmondi police station in this regard and police have sought four days remand from the court for the three arrestee.
