A Dhaka court on Monday placed MM Sekandar, chief reporter of private television channel Ekushey TV, on two-day remand in a case filed over allegations that he sexually harassed a female co-worker.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Sikder issued the order after Mobin Ahmed Bhuiyan, sub-inspector of Hatirjheel police station and investigation officer of the case, produced Sekandar before the court with a 5 -day remand petition.

In the remand petition, the IO said Sekander needed to be placed in remand so police could interrogate him over the involvement of others in the incident.

Along with the remand rejection prayer, Defense Counsel Tuhin Howlader filed a bail petition on behalf of Sekandar, which was also rejected by the court.

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Sekandar from his Banasri residence in Dhaka around 2:30am on Sunday.

On Monday, Sekandar was handed over to Hatirjheel police after the victim lodged a case against him under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, said Abu Mohammad Fazlul Karim, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Before filing the case, the victim filed a written complaint with the channel authorities. The three-page long letter—addressed to ETV's managing director—provided details on how the harassment took place.

She claimed that Sekandar had been sexually harassing her for a long time, but when she took up the matter with the higher authorities, they did not pay any heed.
