Police: Bombs found in Chittagong den similar to those used in Gulshan attack

Update : 08 Mar 2017, 11:45 PM
Police have claimed that they recovered grenades, similar to those used in the Gulshan terror attack, from a 'militant hideout' in Mirsarai upazila of Chittagong. “We found 29 grenades, 280 packets of splinters, 40 packets of explosive gel, machetes, 11kg of bomb making materials and black clothing,” Chittagong police's Superintendent Noor E Alam Mina said on Tuesday. Police and counter-terrorism personnel raided the house around 10pm on Tuesday after one of the suspects arrested in Comilla gave up its location. Three suspects have been detained. Two men, including one Mahmud Hasan, were arrested in Comilla on Tuesday after they hurled bomb at police during a routine vehicle search. The identity of the third suspect, a woman, was not disclosed.

“No-one was detained during our raid,” SP Mina said. House owner Ridwanul Haque, a local BNP leader, said one Mahmud rented the ground floor on February 1 posing as a clothes trader. Mahmud lived there with a woman he said was his sister, brother-in-law Kamal and their one-year-old son. SP Mina said the woman and Kamal are on the run. Later, Mirsarai police station ASP Mahbubur Rahman said that house owner Ridwanul had been detained after new information was unearthed by investigators. He added that a case had been filed with Mirsarai police station against 10 JMB members in connection with the recovered explosives and bomb making materials. “Improvised grenades found at the Mirsarai hideout are similar to those used in the Dhaka cafe attack,” Counter-terrorism unit's ADC Abdul Mannan told the Dhaka Tribune: Bangladesh witnessed its deadliest terror attack in July last year when terrorists barged into an upscale restaurant and killed 20 hostages, mostly foreigners. Two police officials were also killed in the attack.
