He was so blinded by the thirst of power that he even planned to kill Shamim Patwary, the man nominated by his party to contest the by-election.
During interrogation, Quader, a physician by profession, told the police that he had become isolated and grew depressed since Liton was elected as the lawmaker of Gaibandha 1 in the 2013 polls.
Quader, a native of Bogra, was elected from the seat in 2008 but did not get the Grand Alliance’s ticket in ‘13. He ran independently but lost sorely to Liton.
He told police he was convinced that his defeat was due to the four corruption cases filed against him by the Anti-corruption Commission, which he attributed to Liton’s conspiring.
He was so depressed that homicidal and suicidal tendencies grew in him, he said in interrogation.
The sources said police officials were tense while he was in custody because of his mood and the former MP was kept under close watch.
On Saturday police asked him to make a confession. He was told that four of his associates had already given confessional statements.

they are expecting to gear up their investigation and the persons who reconnoitered Liton’s home and the vicinity along with the alleged informer Chandan Kumar Roy could be traced very soon.
Police said Quader selected the three killers belonging from such a society who could do anything for money.
In the confessional statement Quader claimed that he had been planning the murder for six months but did not succeed before.
However, police said from the others’ confessional statements and their investigation they had learned that the plan had been cooking for not less than a year.
Law enforcers said solving the case would have been more difficult if the three assassins did not make a mistake. In December, the three were roaming around together in Sundarganj where MP Liton was scheduled to go but he did not go there that day and stayed in Dhaka instead.
After failing that attempt, they decided to do some mugging instead. They snatched the mobile phone of a young boy named Fahim, a neighbour of Liton. However, they left a magazine full of bullets there.
This magazine was from a gun registered to Quader’s name.
Police then tracked and tapped the boy’s phone and soon found Quader having conversations with the killers on it.
An senior police official said the three were not acquainted with Quader personally. An associate of Quader took them to him. Police is currently in search of those associates and those who helped Chandan Kumar Roy and his associates.
A source said Chandan was suspected to be hiding in India.
The three killers - Mohammad Shahin, Mehedi Hasan and Anarul Islam Rana - after ensuring that MP Liton is staying home that day, started for Gaibandha from Bogra in Quader’s microbus.
After reaching Sundarganj, they took a motorbike in Chaprahati.
After reaching Dhoabadanga they loitered at the kitchen market in the area and when Chandan told them to come to the MP’s home they went there and shot MP Liton.
Soon after the killing the three went back to Chaprahati immediately and after returning to Bogra, gave back the guns to Quader and left. They went to Dhaka through Bogra by bus that day.
Liton stayed in India through Benapole landport on October 19 and stayed there till January 6, in order to have an alibi. But he came back and forth through the border secretly two or three times. He last came back in this manner on December 31, on the day of the murder, to ensure the success of the mission.
