Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBN) has arrested an individual self-identifying as "Jinn-er Badshah," from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The man was identified as Jabed Hossain, 40. He was arrested from the departure terminal of the airport on Friday morning, said APBN's Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Alamgir Hossain.
According to Alamgir, Jabed swindled money out of the relatives of the departing passengers by lying to them of his "supernatural powers."
Using various methods, Jabed would collect the phone numbers of the departing passengers' relatives right when the passengers would be leaving through the terminal.
Later, upon contacting the relatives, he would make false claims about having foreknowledge of the dangers the departing passengers would be facing after leaving the airport.
Jabed would then demand a particular sum of money to keep the passengers "safe." The scared relatives would comply with his demands by sending him whatever sum they could manage through bKash.
ASP Alamgir further said that Jabed has been extorting money using this peculiar method for years, and has amassed considerable wealth under the alias "Jinn-er Badshah."
He said APBN had arrested Jabed before. After spending three months in jail, Jabed was released on bail and went back to conning people for money.
Executive magistrate of Civil Aviation set up a mobile court on Friday to arrest Jabed after a passenger accused him of fraudulent activities. Jabed has been sentenced to two years imprisonment.
