A longstanding turf war between two local rival groups led to the brutal murder of the chairman of Banshbari union parishad in Raipura upazila, police said on Friday.
Md Sirajul Haque, the six-time chairman of the union, was gunned down by unidentified miscreants at the upazila’s Arkanda village on Thursday afternoon, Narsingdi’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Saifullah Al Mamun said.
The 70-year-old was returning from the upazila headquarters by motorbike.
“We have made significant progress in identifying the suspects and establishing the motive behind the murder,” SP Saifullah said.
The SP declined to share the details for the sake of the investigation into the case, which was not filed until Friday evening.

Sirajul’s body was kept at Raipura police station since Thursday evening after an autopsy at the Narsingdi Sadar Hospital.
Police said the body was handed over to the family on Friday before two namaz-e-janazas scheduled after Jummah and Asr prayers.
In Sobhanpur village under the same union on Thursday evening, Sirajul’s supporters torched the houses of several followers of rival Hafizur Rahman Shahed Sarkar, a local Awami League leader who died of cardiac arrest in March this year.
Additional police forces were deployed in the area since that time to maintain law and order.
