Forensics on Jasmine suicide claim: ‘It’s not possible’

Update : 03 May 2018, 01:56 PM
Many questions have been raised about the apparent double homicide and suicide of a woman and her two children in the Darussalam area at Mirpur on Monday. The woman, Jasmine Aktar, 35, and her two daughters Hasiba Tahsin Himi, 9, and Adila Tahsin Honey, 5 were found in a pool of blood in a locked room in their house around 7pm, in what has been claimed to be a double murder by Jasmine before she killed herself by slitting her own throat, her wrists, and stabbing herself in the stomach 10-12 times. Himi had her throat and left wrist slit and three stab wounds on her abdomen, while the youngest victim Honey also had her throat slit, her right wrist slit, and her abdomen stabbed once. Many including the family, locals, police and forensic doctor have raised doubts about the viability of the claims of suicide given the fact that her wounds are inconsistent with a person’s ability to self-inflict so many different stab wounds. Head of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Forensic Department Prof AM Selim Reza told the Dhaka Tribune on Wednesday that the injury marks on Jasmine’s body are ‘odd’. “These are not the kinds of wounds we see on suicide victims. Usually there is just one wound but this woman had far too many.” When asked whether it was unusual for a person to stab themselves so many times in a suicide, he said: “It is not possible.”

After the autopsy on Tuesday, Selim Reza said the three had died from excessive blood loss. Doctors have also collected viscera samples from their bodies to examine if it contained any poison, he added. The family members of the victims have expressed doubt over the story, since they found out several other family members were at home when the incident occurred – all of whom have said they heard nothing. Jasmine’s brother Shahinur said he does not believe his sister could do this. “It is beyond my imagination that my sister could do this. How could she have killed her two children and nobody heard anything?” Meanwhile, family members who were at home have claimed that the room where the incident took place was locked from the inside. There was only one access point, which was the door. They said that there was no possibility of someone murdering them and leaving, calling the incident a “mystery”. Police however has said that because there was just one entry point, Jasmine most likely killed her children before she killed herself.

When the Dhaka Tribune asked whether it was unusual for a person to stab themselves so many times in a suicide, Darus Salam Police station Officer-in-Charge Md Selimuzzaman said: “We are also looking into other possible reasons behind their deaths.” The nephew of Jasmine’s husband Hasibul, Rawshan Jamil and his wife Rumana Begum, were also living with the family for the past one-and-a-half years in another room in the flat. Rawshan was not home and Rumana was asleep in their room when the incident happened. Jasmine’s cousin Rehana Parvin blamed the deaths on Jasmine’s depression, which she said had worsened over the past month, as she was not happy about her children’s education and upbringing. “Jasmine felt her job was getting in the way of her from taking care of her children. But she was also unwilling to resign as government jobs do not come easily.” However, all family members said Hasibul and Jasmine seemingly had no problems. They were not going through any marital discord which could have led to such a gruesome outcome. The tragic incident occurred at the couple’s flat on the third floor of building No 134 at Paikpara C Type Government Staff Quarters between Monday afternoon and evening. Hasibul is an assistant legislative draftsman at the Parliament Secretariat while Jasmine worked at the Department of Agricultural Extension.
