Six held for leaking SSC, HSC questions

Update : 15 Feb 2017, 12:10 AM
The arrests were made after the DB conducted several drives in different areas of Dhaka over a period of a week. A case was later lodged against them with Kalabagan police station. The arrestees are Md Faysalur Rahman alias Akash, Md Razu Ahmed, Md Zohayer Ayaz, Mohiuddin Imon, Swadhin Al Mamun and Kazi Rashedul Islam alias Rony, according to the DMP Media and Public Relation department. DB sources said they first arrested the syndicate leader Faysal and based on information provided by him, the DB team arrested the rest. However, investigators are yet to find any link between the arrestees and officials of Bangladesh Government Press but they are suspecting that some BG press officials with ill-motive might be involved with groups leaking exam questions. Detectives referred to the arrest of a BG press official last year by the DMP on charge of leaking question papers. The press official had confessed about his involvement with leaking questions before a court and said fraudulent groups involved in such crimes maintain contact with corrupt officials of the state-run press. DB Joint Commissioner Abdul Baten said the ring, led by Akash, operated through pages and groups made on social media platforms and messaging services, using fake profiles and names. They also developed different mobile phone applications for leaking questions and later removed it from the internet to evade detection by law enforcement agencies, he added.

Abdul Baten also said: “The group used Facebook pages and groups to distribute leaked questions among eager students in exchange of money. “They also used messaging services like Facebook messenger, WhatsApp, Viber, Line, WeChat and Imo for the distribution. “They charged Tk500 to Tk25,000 for the leaked questions and the payments were made mostly through bKash and other mobile banking services after exams were completed. The payments varied on the number of questions that matched with the real exam question paper.” Addressing a press conference at DMP Media Centre on Tuesday morning, the DB high official also said the ring usually provided fake question papers which were more like mock questions given at coaching centres for preparation of SSC and HSC exams. “We have seized many sets of question papers from their possession and we are now cross-checking them with the real questions. Until now, we have found only 30 to 40 percent similarity between the fake and real one,” he said. DMP Media and Public Relation department’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Yusuf Ali said: “We will be conducting more drives to arrest other members of the ring as we are suspecting that  the mastermind behind the syndicate is still at large.” Chairman of Dhaka Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board Mahabubur Rahman, who was also present at the press briefing, claimed the leak of questions from the education board was quite impossible as they have been maintaining strong vigilance over the issue. Question paper leaks ahead of different levels of examinations became a growing concern for the Bangladesh government as it was hampering the education system and putting the Education Ministry under fire for the last few years. Dhaka Tribune on February 13 published an investigative story titled “SSC question paper leaks going strong on Facebook” where activities of such gangs were mentioned. It was found that certain groups on Facebook with different names offer question papers the night before the exam and accept online payment after the exams are held. Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Monday said a probe committee will be formed to investigate the alleged leaks of the mathematics question papers. He also said that a retest is likely if the probe committee finds the allegations to be true. The exam was held on Sunday.
