After so many days of investigation, the victims’ relatives, the journalist community and the countrymen are keen to know what exactly happened with the duo and who are the assailants and the masterminds.
Out of their frustration, families of the slain couple termed the delay in digging out or revealing the reason behind the murders an intentional hush-up.
According to them, the ongoing investigation is merely flaunting to the public. With days going by, they seem like losing their hope to get justice with no visible and significant progress in the case.
Sagar, news editor of Maasranga TV, and Runi, senior reporter of television station ATN Bangla, were murdered in their rented flat in Dhaka’s West Rajabazar area on February 11, 2012.
The family members, especially the only son of the journalist couple Mahir Sarowar Megh, now want the prime minister to help get justice for the duo.
Now a fourth grader, Megh told the newspaper on Friday morning: “The investigators are not doing their job seriously. I will contact Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, seeking justice and I just want it.”
Plaintiff of the case and Runi’s brother Nowsher Alam Roman said they want to draw the attention of the PM since the investigators kept failing to come up with significant progress ever since the assassinations.
“The investigators used to contact us at the primary stage, but they hardly contact us now. I think, they are doing it intentionally to hush up the case,” he said, terming the probe a show off.
Nowsher suspects that an influential quarter is to blame for the delay since it is trying to save the criminals linked to the incident from trial.
He also raises question over the capability of the investigators in performing their duty properly.
Runi’s mother Nurun Nahar Mirza, echoing the same, said: “We are exhausted with the slow progress by the investigators.
“We do not hope any longer that the motive will come to light … I may not be able to see the trial being held in my lifetime.”Current status of investigationOn Thursday, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal told reporters that he was not updated about the current status of the investigation.
He then said Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) is currently investigating into the matter and updating court about their findings timely.
At least 157 hearings were held at Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in the case since February 13, 2012, and to date, the court has fixed 47 dates asking the investigators to report.
The court rescheduled March 21 for submission of probe report since investigation officer Mohiuddin Ahamed, assistant superintendent of police now attached with the RAB, failed to submit a report on Thursday, the date set on October 2 last year.
When contacted, Mohiuddin said they were working on the DNA report linked to the murders.
RAB was given the case in April 2012 after police failed to crack the case, but the elite force is yet to make a breakthrough.
RAB had shown six people arrested in the case after one Dr Narayan Chandra Nitai was killed in Dhaka on August 23 in a similar manner the same year. Later, its members also detained a man named Humayun Kabir alias Enamul, as the key suspect in the case.
Humayun was the security guard of the building where Sagar and Runi were killed. They booked Tanvir Rahman, a family friend, who is on bail now.
After the murder, the then home minister Sahara Khatun said the killers would be identified and arrested within 48 hours.
Two days later, Hassan Mahmud Khandker, who was the IGP then, claimed a significant development in the probe, promising the nation for positive news soon, ultimately in vain.
