Robbers, posing as cops, caught with Tk4 lakh in Bogra

Update : 11 Mar 2018, 09:24 PM
Two robbers, who had posed as cops, have been caught while trying to get away with around Tk4 lakh from the Shibganj Post Office in Bogra. Post office staff and locals managed to catch Abdul Hannan, 54, and Sabbir Ahmed, 35, with the bags containing the money during their robbery attempt on Sunday afternoon. They were later handed over to police after a severe thrashing. Several other robbers, including one identified as Masud Rana, had fled in a microbus, said police and locals. One of the detained robbers, Sabbir, was later admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in critical condition. According to post office staff and police, two of the robbers had entered the post office around 1:30pm and met Acting Postmaster (Postal Operator) Jahanur Islam, saying they wanted to open a savings account. They exchanged phone numbers. A while later, Jahanur received a phone call. The man on the other side of the phone had claimed himself to be the Shibganj police station’s officer-in-charge. Jahanur was asked to meet the visiting superintendent of police of Bogra at Shibganj police station. As Jahanur left the post office, Hannan and Sabbir entered his office, broke into the drawers of his desk and bagged around Tk4 lakh. As they were making their way out, the post office staff noticed and chased them. The duo was caught red handed with the help of locals, police said. Confirming the robbers’ attempt and their detention, Shibganj police OC Shahid Mahmud Khan said the acting postmaster is planning to file a case over the incident.
