Custodial torture allegedly behind leather businessman’s death in Dhaka

Update : 22 Nov 2017, 02:18 PM
Shah Alam, a 65-year-old tanner and leather businessman was produced at court on Tuesday after he was taken from his home by the police on Sunday night. He became physically ill during the proceedings and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The doctors pronounced him dead soon after. Shah Alam’s nephews Manik and Liton alleged that MA Rahman, another leather businessman, was shot and injured on Sunday night. Rahman’s family filed a case against Shah Alam and his family that very night, which led to the police picking Shah Alam, his two sons and two nephews up. Manika and Liton claimed the police were hitting them mercilessly as they were taken away from their home. They said Shah Alam’s collapse and subsequent death was caused by the torture he was subjected to in police custody. Hazaribagh police station Officer-in-Charge Mir Alimuzzaman denied the allegations and said he merely died of old age. “Has anyone seen us torture that old guy? This is an outlandish claim!” The DMCH police authorities confirmed the death and said the body is at the morgue, waiting for autopsy. This article was first published on Bangla Tribune
