A handcuffed accused in a theft case escaped police custody while he was being taken to Madaripur court on Monday. Madaripur court police Inspector Ramesh Chandra Dash said handcuffed accused Shahidul, son of Baher Hawladar from Shikdarkandi village under Shibchar upazila, had escaped from a police van at the court premises around 9am Monday. A team of Shibchar police station, however, was able to arrested the runaway from Chhotokutubpur villae of the same upazila later around 5:30pm, said the police station's Officer-in-Charge Jakir Hossain. Shahidul was arrested earlier on October 4 in a case filed over the theft from a shop in Kandi village of the upazila. He was to be produced before a Madaripur court on Monday morning for the hearing on his bail petition. Madaripur Superintendent of Police Md Sarwar Hossain said they had already closed eight police officials over the incident, for negligence of their duty.
