Customs officials have recovered 100,000 ATM cards at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 10:30am on Tuesday.
However, no one was arrested in this connection.
Confirming the incident, Rezaul Karim, assistant commissioner of customs, told the Dhaka Tribune that a preventive team of Customs House conducted a drive at the airport cargo village gate no 2 following a tip-off.
During the drive, the team challenged two persons carrying a box on a trolley but they managed to run away, Rezaul Karim said adding that the customs later recovered 100,000 ATM cards from the box with City Bank written on them.
He said the box had arrived in a Singapore airlines plane on June 26, however, the names and addresses of importers mentioned in the documents were fake. “We are trying to find the actual importers.”
He also said the customs have already informed City Bank authorities regarding the matter.
When contacted, Yahiya Mirza, public relations officer of City Bank said that they had no idea of such incident. The bank official also said there was no communication with any customs official regarding the matter.
