A Chittagong court on Sunday remanded an Indian student of a private medical college for two days, in connection with a case filed with the city’s Akbar Shah police station over the killing of his roommate.
Earlier on June 19, police had detained Gangmal Niraj, a medical student of the University of Science and Technology Chittagong (USTC), in connection with the murder of fellow Indian USTC medical student Ateef Sheikh.
“The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Mehnez Rahman granted a two-day remand for Niraj, after he was produced before the court regarding the Ateef murder. Police had placed a 10-day remand prayer,” Chittagong Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (prosecution) Nirmalendu Bikash Chawakrabatry told the Dhaka Tribune.
Ateef’s father Abdul Khalique had filed the murder case accusing eight students of USTC of his son’s murder, including six Indians and two Bangladeshis.
The eight accused are – Tongbram Joyotsana Debi, Gangmal Niraj, Misnam Winson Singh, Athokpam Ronald, Prabhakar Laishram, Malemnganba Mayenbham, Promesh Chakma and Sojol Chakma Moon.
Ateef Sheikh, 25, a final year MBBS student at USTC, was stabbed allegedly by Maisnam Winson Singh on July 14 after an in-house party. Winson tried to hang himself from the ceiling in the same room, but failed as Niraj and Joyotsana resuced him and rushed both Ateef and Winson to the hospital, where Ateef was declared dead.
Winson is currently admitted in a private hospital in Chittagong.
After the murder, police said Joyotsana, who was in a relationship with Ateef, and Niraj had both given statements saying that Ateef and Winson used to exchange heated words after drinking. All four lived in the same flat.
Police have taken the passports of the students into custody after the incident, including that of Ateef.
