A Dhaka court on Sunday granted a three-day remand for former Jamalpur-1 lawmaker and Baksiganj Upazila Awami League president Nur Mohammad in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after a hearing on Sunday afternoon.

Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Sohel Sarkar of Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station, produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand.

According to the remand petition, Nur Mohammad had long been involved in organizational activities as an active member of Awami League. The petition alleged that he participated in party meetings and rallies, recruited members, collected funds, and played a role in activities aimed at opposing the government.

Investigators also stated that a mobile phone, SIM card, and other materials were seized from him at the time of arrest. The petition argued that remand was necessary to examine the seized evidence, identify other individuals allegedly involved, trace sources of funding, and uncover further details related to the case.

Defense lawyers, including Kamrul Hossain and Abdur Rahim, opposed the remand request and sought its cancellation. The prosecution contested their plea. After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand.

During the hearing, Nur Mohammad was allowed to address the court. He claimed that he had remained at his residence since the July movement, particularly after August 5.

“If I were guilty, I would have fled. But I did not go anywhere. I have committed no offence,” he told the court.
He further said that he runs a business and regularly travelled between his home and workplace, alleging that he may have been implicated in the case due to personal enmity.

Nur Mohammad was arrested by detectives of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) from a residence in the capital’s Gulshan area on the night of June 27.

According to the case statement, on June 18 at around 9:45am, Nur Mohammad, accompanied by 30 to 35 unidentified associates, allegedly brought out an unlawful procession on Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Sarani near Mohakhali Bus Terminal under Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.

The complaint alleges that the group carried sticks and provocative banners and placards, chanted anti-state slogans, and sought to destabilise the country and threaten public security and national sovereignty. It further claims that they detonated cocktails, causing panic among the public.

Police later recovered unexploded cocktails, provocative banners and placards, and mobile phones from the scene. Nur Mohammad was subsequently arrested as a suspect in connection with the case.
