The identities of 58 people killed during the May 2013 Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar in Motijheel have been identified, with the investigation into alleged crimes against humanity now about 90% complete, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Md Aminul Islam has said.
He disclosed the information while speaking to reporters at his office on Tuesday afternoon.
Aminul Islam said the probe into the incident surrounding the Hefazat-e-Islam gathering at Shapla Chattar on May 5, 2013, has uncovered multiple findings.
“On that day, 32 people were killed in Dhaka alone, and we have identified them. Autopsies have been conducted on some of the bodies,” he said.
He added that investigators have identified a total of 58 victims, including 20 killed in Narayanganj, five in Chittagong and one in Comilla on May 6.
“The investigation is now in its final stage. For the sake of the probe, we cannot disclose the names of the accused at this time,” he said.
He noted that several former inspectors general of police (IGPs) have already been arrested, and names of others allegedly involved—from top government levels to the then army chief—have also emerged.
“Our investigation is nearly 90% complete, and we expect to finish it by June 7. Formal charges will be filed afterward,” he added.
Responding to a question about evidence, Aminul Islam said investigators have spoken to the families of the victims and collected statements from relatives of those killed.
“We have gathered sufficient evidence overall,” he said.
When asked whether former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun would be charged, he said: “Our investigation found that he was outside the country at the time of the incident. We are reviewing that aspect. If issues of superior command responsibility arise, those will also be examined.”
