A Dhaka court on Thursday granted five more days of remand to former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) officer Major (retd) Manzil Haider Chowdhury in the murder case of businessman Abdul Wadud.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piyas issued the order after a petition from the Detective Branch (DB) police.
State lawyer and Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi said the remand was granted by the court.
Manzil Haider Chowdhury was arrested from the DOHS area of Mohakhali in Dhaka on Thursday, April 9. The next day, Friday, April 10, the court granted him 4 days of remand.
On Monday, he was placed on another three-day remand. After seven days of remand in two phases, investigating officer Inspector Md Amjad Hossain Talukder of the Ramna zonal team of DB police produced him in court on Thursday and sought another seven days of remand.
Omar Faruq Faruqi argued for the state, while defence lawyer Advocate Kamal Hossain sought cancellation of the remand and bail. The court later ordered five more days of remand.
Case records show that businessman Abdul Wadud was shot dead on July 19, 2024, in the Nilkhet area of New Market during protests in the July movement. His brother-in-law Abdur Rob later filed a murder case with New Market Police Station.
The case names 130 accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader.
