Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed will inaugurate the new Supreme Court Secretariat on Thursday at noon. The information was confirmed on Wednesday by SC's Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam.
Earlier, on November 30, the government issued the “Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance, 2025,” establishing a separate secretariat for the Supreme Court to ensure full independence of the judiciary. With this ordinance, the judiciary becomes completely separate from the executive branch. The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs issued the ordinance under the direction of the President.
On November 20, the Advisory Council of the interim government gave final approval to the draft of the “Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance, 2025.”
For context, to strengthen institutional independence of the judiciary, the Chief Justice proposed the establishment of a separate Secretariat for the Supreme Court on October 27, 2024. The proposal included a draft ordinance, an organogram for the new Secretariat, and suggested amendments to the Rules of Business and Allocation of Business. This was intended to help the High Court Division effectively supervise and manage subordinate courts and tribunals as outlined in Article 109 of the Constitution.
