A contempt of court petition has been filed against Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer of the northern region for National Citizen Party (NCP) over his derogatory remarks about the High Court.
The petition was submitted to a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Khatun and Justice Mubina Asaf on Wednesday. The petition was filed by lawyer Md Jasim Uddin.
Earlier, on Saturday, Sarjis Alam was served with a legal notice asking him to issue a public apology, both in writing to the chief justice and through a press conference, for his remarks on the High Court. The notice was sent by Supreme Court lawyer Md Jasim Uddin.
On Thursday, the High Court rejected a writ petition seeking an order to prevent the swearing-in of Ishraque Hossain as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). Following the verdict, Sarjis Alam posted on Facebook: “If mobs can be used to get verdicts from the High Court, then what is the need for this High Court?”
In response to this post, the legal notice instructed Sarjis Alam to submit a written apology to the chief justice through the registrar general of the Supreme Court. It also asked him to call a press conference within two hours of receiving the notice to issue a public apology.
However, as Sarjis Alam did not apologise after receiving the notice, a contempt of court petition was subsequently filed against him.
